Climate

Guizhou belongs to the humid subtropics monsoon climatic region and the climate is warm and wet. The temperature is around 6-25℃ and less rain in May. Summer lasts from Jun to Aug, the main days are sunny days, sometimes with thunderstorm and the temperature is around 20-32℃. The weather is dry from Sep to Nov, the average temperature is around 10-23℃. The coldest season is from Dec till next Feb, most of the days are cloudy and with light rain, the air is cold and humid. The temperature is around 0-15℃. Freeze occasionally happens in the high altitude region.

Affected by the atmospheric circulation and geography, the climate of Guizhou province is diverse. It is said that you would see 4 seasons inside a mountain, different climate even with 10 miles distance. The outstanding feature of Guizhou climate is summer is relative cool in Guiyang comparing with other capital cities in China.

Transportation

Guizhou is a mountainous province, it changes greatly with altitude from 400m to 1400m. Motorway is the main transportation in long distance driving and you need to enter the winding mountain way when enter the remote and isolate villages. As most of the villages are built on the mountains, so we have to walk the uphill road always, so we suggest to you wear the hike shoes with soft-soled. You’d better not wear the hiking boot with hard-soled, because it would be easy to slip down on the wet slab stone while raining.

Dining & Food

Just like cuisine in other parts of Southwest China, people in Guizhou love spicy and sour food because they believe it removes dampness from their bodies. If you don't like spicy food, please let your guide know in advance and we can prepare non-spicy food for you. Even if you think you can handle extra spicy food, we still recommend that you try mild spicy food first, for people in different places have different perceptions of spiciness. Guizhou has a wide variety of vegetables, especially leafy ones, and you can taste those that interest you.

As most of the places included in the itinerary in Guizhou Province are located in remote mountains areas, very few restaurants are available. During the journey, we may only find some simple food sold by local villagers or cooked in their own homes. We may not be able to find food at the right time because we might be hiking in the mountains at that moment. So we suggest you prepare some snacks and fruits in advance.

Accommodation

Except the capital city Guiyang, all the rest cities in Guizhou province are 4 stars are the best. And local 3 stars are the best one in most of the towns and counties. Only simple accommodations are available in some villages, guesthouse or home stay would be served. But except the toilets (most of them are traditional latrine, as the excrements can be used for agricultural production), we would provide you the acceptable simple but clean accommodation. Some of the villages, the couples cannot sleep in one bed or even in one room according to the local custom. And nearly all the guesthouses or villagers' home without independent shower rooms, they are all public. Showering is not available in some of the isolated villages. Most of the local accommodations cannot provide western style breakfasts, but our experienced guide would prepare you western style breakfasts like bananas, milk, juice, toasted breads, fried eggs in advance. Laundry Service is only available in Guiyang and Kaili which are the two largest cities in Guizhou but not in other cities.

Camera Attention

The local minority group people are mostly kind and simple, so it should no problem to take photos for them. But we have bellowing suggestions for you:

  1. Most of the old women are camera-shy, they frequently hide the shot, but if they are hold the little kids, you can take the picture of the kid firstly, and then show the picture to the women, they would more willing to coordinate with you.
  2. If you wanna deliver your thanks to them, please do not give cash directly, you'd better prepare some gifts in advance from your country like towel, comb, sewing kit or any woman favorite things.
  3. Please only take photos of the animals inside the village but not touching them.

Cultural Taboos

  • It is not allowed to urinate on the ground nearby the villagers' houses.
  • Local ethnic group people like to drink baijiu (Chinese liquor), and are happy to serve the best wine to honored guests. So if not necessary, please do not refuse them, even just take a sip. But if the wine is totally unacceptable for you, please remind your guide.
  • If meet with funeral on the way, please do not take the picture of it.
