One day Qutan Temple and Liuwan Ancient Pottery Museum Tour

  • 1 Day, 0 Night

This tour will lead you to Qutan Temple, located in the southern part of Ledu County, 90km (56 miles) from Qinghai's capital city, Xining. Qutan Temple consists of a group of buildings from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The style broadly follows the layout of the Forbidden City Imperial Palace in Beijing. When it was originally built in 1309, it was just a small temple of the Gulugpa Tibetan Buddhist sect. The Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang gave money to enlarge the temple and renamed it "Qutan." The temple is famous for its ancient architecture and paintings. On this tour you will also visit the Liuwan Museum of Ancient Painted Pottery. The museum houses about 40,000 ancient painted potteries, makes it the largest in China. Walk from the Pottery Museum, there is a village nearby, it's a natural village in the north of China but not a tourist place. You can walk around and take a look of  how does it look like the northern people's living area if time permitted.

Why choose such kind of one day trip

You might probably stop at Xining as a passby city, like morning landing flight (the flight need to land in Xining before 11am) and depart by evening train to Lhasa,Tibet.

There is less tourists to visit Qutan Temple where is China Adventure Specialist's special recommendation for you but it's definitely a gem attraction. No matter the architecture or the mural inside the temple are worth-visiting. Comparing with the famous Kumbum Monastery with lots of the tourists hordes, we strongly recommend you to visit Qutan Temple without crowds. You would gain more under a peaceful environment. Meanwhile you would appreciate the beautiful mural.

 Traveling Tips:

l  Comparing with Kumbum Monastery, Qutan Temple is more about a cultural relics and no many local residences to do the praying activity there. So it's quiet and no many worshippers there. It's not a live monastery but it's a wonderful cultural heritage.

l  The Liuwan Ancient Pottery Museum is closed for tourists on each Monday.

l There is a small hill with easy climbing to go to the top and take a panoramic view of the whole architecture groups of the temple.
