One day Qutan Temple and Hongshuiquan Mosque Tour

  • 1 Day, 0 Night

This tour will lead you to Qutan Temple, located in the southern part of Ledu County, 90km (56 miles) from Qinghai's capital city, Xining. Qutan Temple consists of a group of buildings from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The style broadly follows the layout of the Forbidden City Imperial Palace in Beijing. When it was originally built in 1309, it was just a small temple of the Gulugpa Tibetan Buddhist sect. The Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang gave money to enlarge the temple and renamed it "Qutan." The temple is famous for its ancient architecture and paintings.

On this tour you will also visit the Hongshuiquan Mosque in Pingan County. This remote mosque showed little evidence of restoration, yet its condition was good. On the architectural style, Hongshuiquan mosque integrates the Han, Hui, Tibetan and other ethnic architectural style and features, but also used a large number of auspicious patterns, such as chrysanthemums, bamboo, plum blossom, orchid, The Eight Auspicious Symbols, the dark Eight Immortals, poetry and painting, etc. Han, Hui, Tibetan and other ethnic cultural elements appear in the same mosque, which is rare in chinese mosques, but also show as a symbol of national unity and the crystallization of national wisdom. Hongshuiquan mosque’s brick art is very exquisite, rare boutique. The beautiful patterns carved on the blue brick mill are the wisdom and skills outcomes accumulated of Chinese Muslims over the years.

Itinerary details

This one-day tour is perfect for those looking for a flexible tour out of Xining. Not only visit the "Mini Forbidden City" at Qutan Temple, but you'll also learn about Chinese and Tibetan history and culture. After touring the Ming Dynasty Buddhist temple, we would drive you to the Ledu Town to have typical Qinghai cuisine – including the Hand-Pulled Noodle with Soup & Pork Chop stew in soy sauce. After lunch, you will visit Hongshuiquan Mosque. And the decoration of this mosque is quite rare as it combines with the Tibetan Buddhism Culture and also the Taoist factor, not only Islamic cultural factors. It’s the refection of the national amalgamation in hundreds of years in this district.

Meet at your hotel or Xining Airport or the hotel in Xining (if depart from hotel, we would depart at 08:30am), drive 50 mins (from airport) or 1.5 hours (from Xining hotel) to Ledu County and visit Qutan Temple (1.5 hours sightseeing duration) and then drive 1.5 hours to have lunch at Ledu County. Spend around 45 mins for having lunch, then we drive you 1 hour to visit Hongshuiquan Mosque (1.5 hours sightseeing duration). Back to Xining city at around 6:00pm.

Note: If you’d like to choose this tour based on landing Xining in the morning and depart by the latest train to Lhasa at 09:30pm, you need to choose the flight to land in Xining Airport before / at 11am and there is no time for lunch, we only can offer you simple lunch box which prepared by your guide from Xining. Then drive back to Xining before 5pm, as we need to keep you some time no matter for a good dinner before boarding on the train (the train duration is 21 hours), but also go to the supermarket to buy some food before boarding on the train, as there is no good option for the food selling on the train.

Why choose such kind of one day trip

You might probably stop at Xining as a passby city, like morning landing flight (the flight need to land in Xining before 11am) and depart by evening train to Lhasa,Tibet.

There is less tourists to visit Qutan Temple where is China Adventure Specialist's special recommendation for you but it's definitely a gem attraction. No matter the architecture or the mural inside the temple are worth-visiting. Comparing with the famous Kumbum Monastery with lots of the tourists hordes, we strongly recommend you to visit Qutan Temple without crowds. You would gain more under a peaceful environment. Meanwhile you would appreciate the beautiful mural. The same as the Hongshuiquan Mosque, no tourists there, but it is really a wonderful off-the beaten track attraction.

Traveling Tips:

  • Comparing with Kumbum Monastery, Qutan Temple is more about a cultural relics and no many local residences to do the praying activity there. So it's quiet and no many worshippers there. It's not a live monastery but it's a wonderful cultural heritage.
  • The Liuwan Ancient Pottery Museum is closed for tourists on each Monday.
  • There is a small hill with easy climbing to go to the top and take a panoramic view of the whole architecture groups of the temple.
