Half day Kumbum Monastery Tour (6 hours duration)

  • 0 Day, 0 Night

Kumbum (also known as Ta'er) Monastery, in Qinghai Province, is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gulugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Tsongkhapa is also the teacher of Dalai Lama and Panchen. Located in a narrow valley in southwest of Xining, the monastery is home to the ''Tree of Great Merit''a sandalwood tree that was brought to life after Tsongkhapa's birth in 1357. The leaves and the bark of this tree are rumored to bear impressions of the Buddha's face and various mystic syllables. The monastery also features a Golden Tiled Temple, a small building with a roof of pure gold plate housing silk brocades, gold lamps, and other priceless relics. The monastery expanded until the 1580s, when the third Dalai Lama built a fence around the ''Tree of Great Merit'' and established a monastic college here. The Seventh Dalai Lama (1708-1757), along with the Thirteenth and Fourteenth, spent several years studying at Kumbum in 1716 before moving to Lhasa. Kumbum was also an important stop on the old Mongolia-Tibet caravan route from Ulaan Baatar to Lhasa. Today, there are four monastic colleges at Kumbum with over 400 monks in attendance.

Why choose such kind of half day trip

You might probably stop at Xining as a passby city, like morning landing flight (the flight need to land in Xining before 11am) and depart by evening train to Lhasa,Tibet.

Kumbum Monastery is one of the two most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet. So it's the first recommended attraction in Xining city. Although you will visit 3 or 4 monasteries during your stay in Tibet, the status of the Kumbum Monastery is very important, so you might not want to miss it for your short staying in Xining.

Traveling Tips:

l  Photography is unpermitted inside the hall.

l  Not every monk is friendly because of its famous reputation and there would be lots of the domestic tourists groups travel on Jul and Aug with loudspeaker used.

l  It's quieter in the morning, peaceful like the spirit of Buddhist. So if possible, we strongly recommend you to visit the monastery in the morning to avoid tourist hordes.

l Better to wear longer trousers or skirt if you can.

l  If Tibet is included in your trip, you would find that compared to Tibet proper, the Kumbum experience would feel more commercially orientated.

l  Sun glass, sun lotion, lipstick are necessary and helpful to visit Qinghai province.

l  Outside the Monastery lots of people trying to sell souvenirs & stuff, best is not to engage with them as you might feel their selling is aggressive.
