17 Days Wonderful Festivals Tour to Guizhou

  • 17 Days, 16 Nights

Festivals in Guizhou:

Festival is one of the most ceremonious celebrations of ethnic minority groups in Guizhou, to pray for a good health and favourable harvest, to offer young people the opportunity meeting their future lovers, as well as to commemorate their ancestors. It always attracts people from different villages to join this great traditional event.

Apart from the wonderful dance and music, there are also lots of other activities, such as bull-fighting,horse-racing,basketball matches,mountain-climbing, love-hunting etc. The highlight of these festivals always see girls dressing up in silver-decorated embroidered costumes, singing and dancing together to the music played by the boys in a circle one after another. These activities are all exciting and full of competitions. The boys try to show their skill and wisdom to win the admiration of the girls and it is a good chance for the youth to express their love toward one another.

The Lusheng is the most popular musical instrument played during the festivals, it is a reed-pipe wind instrument with multiple bamboo pipes fitted with a free reed of copper piece, these pipes are fixed into a long blowing tube made of fir tree. It usually has six different tones and is thus a polyphonic instrument. The sizes of Lusheng range from very small to several meters in length and the performers often dance and swing the instruments from side to side while playing.

Although minority festival celebrations are also popular in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces, these happening among different ethnic minority groups in Guizhou are most traditional and diversified which have brought Guizhou the reputation of "Colorful Guizhou".

Why book this trip?

You will take an extraordinary journey into the mountains of southwestern China to witness the traditional lives and century-old festivals of the minority tribes living in the Guizhou Province. We've timed our visit to coincide with different exciting village festivals where locals turn out in their most spectacular traditional costume to enjoy singing, dancing, sports and dating.

There are always some unexpected celebrations during this tour which falls in the longest holiday of Spring Festival in China, we will be flexible to visit some other celebrations and festivals which are not in our itinerary.

You will have opportunity staying with local families of the Miao and the Dong to experience their lifestyles and traditions.

Tip for the location of festival

There are lots of the ethnic groups festivals held in Chinese New Year Period, most of the festivals would be celebrated by the branch of different ethnic groups or clan. And each village would hold the festival by turns. So there might be possibility that the taking place of the festival would be changed from one village to another village tentatively. We would also adjust the visiting place according to the latest information. If we cannot visit the village because of the temporary change, we would arrange other festival attending nearby for you but make sure you won't attend the duplicate festival by the same branch of a ethnic group. If the time permitted, we would also probably add the festival attending which is not on our original agenda as we might get the news from local people without informing beforehand. Please prepare some small gifts to the local children in the festival before arriving China, they would quite fresh and happy to have the chocolate or candy from aboard!

Festival category

There are bellowing 6 categories of festivals in Chinese New Year Period in Guizhou Province:

  1. Lusheng Festival. It is held annually, lots of local people attended, mainly held in Miao People area, and the holding time is fixed.
  2. The festivals about sacrifices are mainly held in Dong People's area, sometimes the dates would be changed temporarily and the attendants are the people with the same surname or same clan.
  3. The festivals about entertainment which give chance for young people to show love with each other normally be held between two villages, and mainly happened in Dong People area and there would be more interesting activities.
  4. There is an interesting festival called "Back to parents'home"which is mainly held for the women whom married with the men lives in another village. This kind of festival is grand and solemn, the women would bring lots of the gifts to back home by wearing splendid dress and line up in long queue to enter the village. And nearly whole villagers would attend it, drink in the banquet dinner in the evening and invite the tourists to join in their banquet together. But the dates of this festival would be decided only a few days before Chinese New Year, so we only can arrange it on spot if the time and driving distance is permitted.
  5. Tiao Hua Po – Dancing in the flowers blooming slope. This kind of festivals would be held each year, in small scale, but their dresses are quite special. No bull-fighting in this festival.
  6. Guzang Festival. Guzang Festival is the most important festival for the Miao people to offer sacrifice to their ancestors. It will be held annually while the Grand Guzang Festival will be celebrated each thirteen years and last from three years. The second 2 years are mainly celebrated by dancing and singing activities. The Dong People in Rongjiang Area would celebrate Guzang Festival during Chinese New Year Period. We recommend you to attend Guzang Festival if it is available during your visiting period.

Necessary Tipping:

  • Rain-proof coat as the weather would be getting cold moist if there is light rain, special in the western Miao People area.
  • Anti-skidding sports shoes with soft bottom.
  • Gloves and hat.
  • Headlight or flashlight.
  • Some necessary medicines for diarrhea, cold or accident hurt.

Climate during the Chinese New Year Period

The weather during Chinese New Year Period are mainly gloomy and cloudy day, the temperature is around 2°C-20°C. If there is light rain, the temperature would be down around 4-5°C more. Special in the higher altitude area, you would feel quite cold.

Transportation

Guizhou is a mountainous area, the main transportation is by private vehicle. But the motor-way is also developed in Guizhou province except sometimes you need to drive inside the narrow ways into the small villages, so we might probably need to change the local mini-bus if necessary. As most of the times, you need to hike to the village built on the mountain, so you'd better wear the comfortable hiking shoes for long distance walking and uphill or downhill walking.

Diet

Guizhou cuisine is one of the most delicious cuisines in China. Distinctively spicy and sour food. So if you don't accept spicy food or only can accept a bit spicy, please inform your guide in advance. As most of the itinerary in Guizhou is shuttling inside the villages, and there is only some very simple local restaurant available. The food might not reach your expectation, and the time might not exactly the right time for having meal, so please prepare some snacks and fruit before entering the remote areas.

Accommodation

Except the capital city Guiyang, all the rest of the cities in Guizhou province are 4 star is their best hotels. And local 3 star is the best one in most of the towns and counties. Special inside some villages, only very simple accommodation, guesthouse or just stay inside the villagers'house. But except the toilets (most of them are very traditional dry pail latrine), we would provide you the at least clean accommodation. Some of the villages, the couples cannot sleep in one bed or even in one room according to the local custom. And nearly all the guesthouses or villagers'home without independent shower rooms, they are public. Showering is not available in some of the isolated villages. Most of the local accommodations cannot provide western style breakfasts, but our experienced guide would prepare the western style breakfasts like bananas, milk, juice, toasted breads, fried eggs in advance. Living inside the village would bring you a chance to close with the local people's authentic life, and save the times to drive to the big town or cities. Laundry Service is only available in Guiyang and Kaili these two big cities but not other cities.

Attention for photo taking

Local Guizhou people are kind and simple, most of the time, they are ok if you taking picture for them or with them. But some of them are a bit shy, special the women, so you can take the picture of their children or grandchildren firstly, and show the pictures to them, in order to make the distance getting closer with them, then they might probably accept picture shooting for them. You’d better prepare some small gifts to the local villagers, like combs, shampoo, towels or sewing kit. Cash is not in our suggestion. You also can prepare the gifts under our guide's instruction upon arrival.

If you are attending the festival, please do not take photo closely with the bulls when they are fighting.

Cultural Taboos

  • Please do not pee near the villagers'house
  • Local Miao people like to drink rice wine, and are happy to serve the best wine to honored guests. So if possible, please do not refuse them, even just take a sip. But if the wine is totally unacceptable for you, please remind your guide firstly.
  • If meet with funeral on the way, please do not take the picture of it.
  • For any animals you see in the village, like cattle or dog, but please do not touch it.
